What do you truly want, what’s in the way and how can you overcome?
Most of us have some idea of what we want for our career, our project, our team or important relationships. Yet we don’t really truly know why we want it or what would be different if we were to attain it. Developing a clear understanding of what you want and why, is the start.
Next: “what’s getting in the way of attaining it?” Something you can control, influence or even understand. Or something within holding you back. What are the alternatives you haven’t yet considered?
The last step: outlining and then executing on a plan of concrete measurable actions that move you toward the goal, checking in and adapting as we go.
Simple in theory: a lot of work in practice.
Along the way you become more self aware, better able to manage your stress responses, and build resilience and confidence in who you are and where you are headed..

Coaching begins with an agreement between the coach and client, that covers the who, what, where and when of the arrangement.
Specifically it covers what coaching is and is not. How many sessions we agree on, financial matters and how we conclude the engagement.
This is the bedrock on which the agreement stands and the guide for both coach and client throughout the engagement.
-
Coaching engagements are typically over a number of 45 minutes to one hour sessions. Sessions are typically separated by at least a week to allow for reflection, experimentation and homework assignments.
Depending on the nature of the challenges engagements may extend for around three months or more. Some can go on for years,
-
Typically these are best undertaken as separate engagements. The personal nature of coaching, the need for the utmost confidentiality and the nature of the subject matter tend to be very different from advisory assignments.
-
Mentors give you advice based on their years of experience. They have lived in your shoes and had to face the same problems you may be facing.
Coaches rarely give advice. We start with the assumptions that you are capable of arriving at the answers already - your unique answers - not someone else’s, that we can surface through the coaching process.
-
Therapy starts from a different place. While coaching aims to improve performance, therapy is design to heal and make a person better. it focuses more on the reasons for current problematic behaviour or thoughts that are often rooted in the past and may stem from trauma
Therapy is most appropriate when someone cannot function normally whereas coaching is for those who are functioning well but want to improve how they perform.
-
Before entering into any coaching engagement I hold a free 30-45 minute session to get to know you, explore the issues you are bringing and how I might work together with you as your thought partner.
In that session you will get a sense of who I am, my approach and philosophy and I will have the same sense of you and what you are dealing with.
If we both feel this will work out we will then move to defining an agreement to proceed.
-
When we construct our coaching agreement it will contain terms that we agree will define how and under what circumstances either party may terminate the relationship.
It is in no one’s interest to continue with a coaching program that is not working.
